Alloys
What is an alloy? An alloy is a mixture
of two or more elemental metals. Elemental metals are those
found in the periodic chart of elements, like gold, silver,
copper, tin, and so on. So, for example, bronze is an alloy
of two elements: copper and tin.
There are many different gold alloys: white
gold, pink gold (also called rose gold or red gold), and
even green gold.
White gold is made by mixing nickel or
palladium with gold; pink gold uses copper as the alloy metal;
and green gold is made with the addition of silver to gold.
The percentages and combinations of various
metals is highly variable, and the resulting alloys may be
jealously guarded trade secrets. But you will always know
that the gold content is reflected by the karat of the gold.
