Karat

The purity of gold is measured in karats. Pure gold is 24 karat gold. Eighteen karat gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts something else that is not gold. Fourteen karat gold is 14 parts out of 24 pure gold. In terms of percentage we can divide the karat by 24 and multiply by 100. So 14K gold is 14 divided by 24 which is .5833. Multiplying by 100 gives 58.33%. And that is the percentage of pure gold in a 14K gold item. Eighteen karat gold is 18 divided by 24 or .75 times 100, which means 75% gold.

The part that is not gold can be any other metal. These are called alloy metals and they can be silver, copper, zinc, or a number of other metals depending on the characteristics that are sought in the final metal.
